]]>As the life-blood for the connected ecosystem, a functioning WiFi router is necessary for consumers to enjoy smart devices and the connected lifestyle, including smart TVs and streaming devices, multiplayer gaming, tablets, voice-controlled virtual assistants and smart speakers, telehealth devices and IoT-enabled security systems. Currently, nearly two-thirds of US adults (64 percent) couldn’t be without WiFi for more than one day. As the smart home market and diversity of connected devices continues to grow, dependence on WiFi routers and smart home hubs will continue to intensify: the proliferation of smart devices is forecast to reach 20.4 billion globally by 2020, almost doubling from an estimated 11.1 billion in 2018.
“The fact that the WiFi-connected smart home is the most important technology consumers don’t want to be without–over the smartphone–is a shift that technology experts and brands must understand and plan for, because this is a relatively new market and consumer adoption is not yet mainstream,” said Autumn Braswell, COO, LinQ Integrated Solution at iQor. “Currently, there is no clear brand owning the connected home customer experience. We believe that whoever can help consumers fully realize the potential of the connected home reality—and connect multiple devices for maximum impact, security, and efficiency—will emerge as the brand leader five years from now.”
At the same time, as increased adoption of multiple smart home devices and appliances has heightened dependence on connectivity in the home, the CPX 360 survey also revealed other, pressing smart home-related concerns.
IoT Security Concerns Top Consumer Smart Home Fears
As the smart home grows in popularity, IoT security concerns remain top of mind for consumers. The CPX 360 survey reports that more than two-thirds (70 percent) of consumers are concerned about the lack of security from hackers who might hack into smart devices in the home; these apprehensions escalate among older generations, as nearly four out of five baby boomers (79 percent) are fearful of hackers breaching a smart connected device in their home. Data and privacy fears rank second among consumer smart home concerns. More than half of US adults (58 percent) fear lack of privacy from device manufacturers who have access to data, real-time conversations, voice patterns and search history. These security concerns are a potential barrier for mass consumer connected home adoption.
“Consumer concerns about data privacy and security, including both the unauthorized hacking of devices and theft of device data, consistently rank as one of the leading concerns about connecting devices to the Internet,” says Brad Russell, Research Director for Connected Home, Parks Associates. “Companies are working to adopt best practices for IoT data security and management to allay concerns and deliver peace of mind, including more stringent efforts to secure the home network by deep inspection of incoming and outgoing traffic and monitoring of edge devices to alert for anomalous behavior.”
Consumers Fear “Cascade Effect” Among Connected Home Devices
The promise of the connected ecosystem is that multiple devices will work in harmony to share information and simplify tasks. However, the CPX 360 survey reports that consumers are afraid of the “cascade effect” in the smart home ecosystem. More than half of consumers (54 percent) fear that if one device fails it will cause other connected devices in the home to fail.
This is especially troubling to the consumers because they are already having problems connecting smart devices to the internet, configuring settings and interacting with other devices. Overall, in the past two years, 63 percent of survey respondents had set up issues and 48 percent had operation issues. Connecting the device to interact with other devices was difficult for nearly one-third of consumers (31 percent).
“The connected home contains multiple devices, from a variety of device manufacturers, that are all supposed to work together in harmony. When an issue arises, consumers often do not know how to identify where the issue resides: with connectivity to the internet, with the device itself or with a different device it is connected to,” said Braswell. “This gray area causes confusion with both the customer, as well as customer service departments for various device brands. The fear of the ‘cascade effect’ is real if consumers are already having smart home connectivity, set-up or operation issues.”
Brands can offset issues increasing the “cascade effect” in the connected home by educating consumers and retooling product delivery and customer support methods.
“The smart home and connected ecosystem is designed to transform consumers’ lives by simplifying tasks and providing an added layer of intelligence to devices with actionable insights for the consumer,” said Hartmut Liebel, CEO of iQor. “Consumers will adopt and try a number of different devices and those that enhance their lives and work seamlessly will secure a permanent place in the connected home. The ability to easily operate these connected devices and services, and to readily obtain customer support when needed, will be the crucial factor in adoption. Brands need to expand proactive engagement efforts and simplify products to minimize set-up frustration and directly address consumer concerns around privacy and security.”
Consumers Worried IoT Leading to Heightened Dependence on Technology
The increased value of the WiFi router speaks to the growing adoption of the smart home lifestyle and the desire for the convenience that the connected ecosystem provides, but consumers have reservations about IoT creating an unhealthy dependence on technology. More than half of US adults (53 percent) are concerned that IoT and smart devices will lead to a heightened dependence on technology to conduct daily tasks.
The CPX 360 survey reports that more than 90 percent of consumer households today have a smartphone and that new connected technology is rapidly being adopted. Almost half of the consumer households (42 percent) have a smart TV, nearly one in four have a health wearable device, like a Fitbit, and 16 percent have a voice-controlled virtual assistant, like Alexa or Google home.

I’m Terry Whin-Yates Mr. LockSmith and I have the Top 10 security tips for securing your church during the holiday season. People laugh at me, they go, what do you mean I need security tips for securing my church? It is amazing how many churches are broken into during the Christmas season. It’s amazing, we’re getting call, church after church during the holidays, they’ve been broken into and things have been stolen. And when you think about it from all the bits and pieces, the besides the cash, also the audio visual equipment, the musical instruments, there’s a lot to steal in a church and they’re just highly attractive targets during the holiday season. So this is the following security tips for securing your church. Doesn’t matter what religion, they all get hit during the holiday season.
Rekey your church. Everybody seems to have a key to the front door and the office of the church. Go there, rekey all the locks, know exactly where your keys are and who has them. It’s amazing how many times the church is broken into by a key. Who knows who did it, cuz there’s like 100 keys out there or more. Rekey, know where your keys are, which takes me to the next point. If you’re going to give out keys, do not copy, do not duplicate stamped on the keys is a waste of time. You have a common Schlage, Schlage, Kwikset, Weiser Keyway that everybody can cut keys at the local little hardware store to the shoemaker can cut that key. Do not copy doesn’t help you at all.
Upgrade Your Locks to High Security Locks: You need a high security or restricted keyway. When you give out those keys to people you number them, give them the key, have them sign for it, you know they can’t go to the local hardware store and get a key cut. Only the licensed locksmith that sold you that key system can duplicate the keys. Local hardware store will not have the high security keys. It requires special keys and a lot of the, special keys, special key machines, and a lot of these keys are only sold to locksmith companies. So when you’re gonna rekey, go to the high security restricted key systems like Abloy, Medeco, Primus, those are my three favorite. There’s a few more.
Lock Your Doors: Lock the office and have a secure lock on there. It’s amazing how many times the office, the church office, is unlocked. Put a lock on there, every time it closes, the door automatically locks, and put a good quality deadbolt on that door. People just walk into the office and there’s the offerings from today’s service or last night’s, and it’s just sitting there. I’m amazed at how many offices are unlocked and people just walked into the office and just helped themselves, an unlocked office. So again, secure it, put on a good deadbolt, lock it up. Also, if you’re gonna leave money onsite, have a good quality safe.
Fire and Burglar Safes: Have a burglar safe that is burglar-resistant and you’re gonna put the money in there. Really you shouldn’t leave any money in there but if you have to, put it into a burglar-resistant safe. A fire safe is a fire safe, it will not stop any form of attack, it’s to protect papers and valuable papers against fire. If you’ve seen any of my videos, you know all these electronic safes or these little fire safes you buy at your Home Depot or hardware store or Costco, you can open them in seconds, and if you have a screwdriver or a pry bar, there’s nothing you can’t open, so you have to have a proper burglary-resistant safe.
Alarms and camera systems. Yes, alarm your church. You have musical instruments, you have audio visual, you have a lot of expensive items, alarm the church and have it monitored.
Security Guard or Runner Service: When the alarm goes off, the police, it’s a low priority to go to a residential or even commercial or church break and enter. If the alarm goes off, it’s a low priority. Get yourself a security guard or runner service to show up. Don’t have one of your members of the church show up, they’re not prepared to deal with a break-in in progress. So have a professional security guard company, runner service, they’ll go there, it’s not expensive, the alarm goes off, the runner service shows up, they see a beanie in progress or whatever, they know who to call and when they call the police, the police will respond to your runner service immediately.
Engrave or ID Mark all Equipment: One of the simplest and least expensive and most overlooked is engrave information on everything you have in the church of value. Your speaker systems, your musical instruments, TVs, everything, engrave property of your church. Have your phone number on there. This helps on a couple things. Sometimes the burglars will see you’ve engraved everything and not steal it. Or if they do steal it and the police find it later, you can recover your valuable items. So engrave everything, especially the audio visual stuff, it doesn’t take much to put “Property Of” and the phone number. Put it on everything you have. It’s quick, easy, and very inexpensive. Go buy a Dremel or Buzz Bomb or stamp the information in. Engrave everything you have of value with your name of your church, your phone number, sometimes you can get a special number from the police will give you a number. Whatever identification number you can get it on everything going. It’s cheap, inexpensive and very very effective. I hope you enjoyed these Top 10 security tips for securing your church during the holiday seasons.
I want to wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
So I hope these top ten, I added a little bit more, security tips to securing your business during the holiday seasons has been good and lots of information for you. So I wanna wish you a merry Christmas and a happy New Year.

Hi, I’m Terry from Mr. Locksmith. It’s Halloween. Now, if you’ve watched my other Halloween stories, one of the worst jobs I left a really, really bad job. It was the lady sitting in the chair, with the cats licking at her face. Don’t watch that video.
Dispite that terrible scary locksmith job I was hungry. You know, can’t help it. I got to eat. We as locksmiths are working 16 hours a day driving around. So, I go out to my favorite Chinese restaurant, Hoy Noodle House.
So, I go to my favorite Chinese restaurant. Yes, I’m eating food, because I am hungry. I have my food. I get my fortune cookie. And, this is what the damn thing said. This is my fortune cookie, after that horrific job the cooke read “You will have a guest tonight. Lock your door.”
That night when I went homeI locked every door I had. I did not sleep at all with that stupid fortune cookie. “I will have a guest tonight. Lock your door.” I did not sleep.
End of Halloween Story and me reading Fortune Cookies.

Internet and Phone Usage
Home alarm companies offer monthly monitoring via three types of connection: Internet (broadband/VOIP), phone line, or cellular service. Usually, Internet monitoring is the least expensive option, while cellular monitoring is the most expensive.
Fire Monitoring
Round-the-clock monitoring is an important component of any home fire alarm system. After all, you’ll want to alert the local fire department the moment the alarm goes off. Additionally, some devices can also be modified to keep track of carbon monoxide levels inside your home. Some can even be operated using a smartphone or a tablet. Source: Alarmrelay
Heat and Smoke Detectors
Heat detectors are meant to assist smoke detectors, not replace them. Fires can be sensed by the rise of room temperature, and detecting this hazard before smoke has been formulated can give you some vital extra time to either put out the fire or evacuate the building. Smoke detectors, for added security for your home and family, we can also fit smoke detectors. Source: Everest

Starting in 2002 to present Honda upgraded to a High Security Sidewinder or Laser key with a transponder or chip key for all ignition, door and truck locks. The locks use wafers and split wafers and are vulnerable to wear and breakage resulting in lock malfunction.
Does your Hondas ignition have one or more of the following problems:
– Difficulty in turning the key in the ignition
– Sticking ignition.
– Key is dirty after removing or turning
– Unable to remove the key
– Key locked in a position
– Key will no longer turn the ignition, key stuck in ignition, key stuck in door lock.
Honda models that are also at risk of ignition and door lock problems are as follows: Honda Civic, Honda Pilot, Honda Accord, 2000, Honda Odyssey, CRV and Honda Element.
If you have a malfunctioning ignition you do not need to replace the steering column or entire ignition, the lock can be removed, rekeyed to match your existing key and the lock modified by Mr. Locksmith Automotive to prevent future similar problems. Also, the Automotive Locksmith can duplicate and program additional keys and remotes onsite.
In conclusion, Honda ignition and door lock problems are vulnerable to the key sticking and the ignition jamming. At Mr. Locksmith we see this problem on a daily basis. Save yourself from expensive dealer replacement parts and avoid the hassle and expense of towing. Furthermore, we will match the locks to your existing key so you still will only need one key to open and start your car and we can duplicate and program spare keys and remotes that will open and start your car.

In Vancouver British Columbia, I (Terry Whin-Yates, 3rd Generation Locksmith), will be offering my Five (5) days hands-on (M-F, 8:30-5:30pm) on Institutional and Basic Locksmith Training as follows:
February 07-11, 2011 (M-F, 8:30am-5:30pm) in Vancouver, BC
I have had requests for an evening Locksmith class so I am planning a two (2) week night class starting soon (M-F, 6pm-9pm) if I can get a minimum of 4 students. Call or e-mail if you are interested.
Our Mr. Locksmith Professional Locksmith state-of-the-art training at our own College provides hands-on comprehensive knowledge about locking and unlocking principles, security issues, and effective use of cutting-edge products. Each student will cut over 100+ keys per students (by code and manual key machines) and rekey, shim, pick open, take apart (and put back together) lots of locks (deadbolts and key in knobs). Also, lock-outs, broken keys and picking locks.
Each student will design a mini Master key system and master key their locks. This is a hands on locksmith training class, no watching movies, you will learn hands on, you do the work. This is not a correspondence course. You will learn to pick locks the starting the first day. The first hour you will cut a key on a computerized key code machine and before noon you will be rekeying locks and cutting keys.
The Mr. Locksmith Locksmithing Class is $1500.00 and includes all supplies, lock picks, tools and material needed to take the course with. The locksmith class is designed to teach engineering or maintenance employees for large facilities (School, Hospital, Corrections, Policing, etc.) and is a good start for beginners. The Five Day Institutional Locksmithing Class is available onsite with a minimum of four (4) students. Call or e-mail to arrange a class or for next course dates.
Note: All students must pass a criminal records check. (except Police, Hospital or School employees). Call or e-mail for details.
