There are Vancouver residents who are concerned with their security and have determined that they will require a high security lock. One of the reasons for this has to do with the problem of “Bump Keys” that have recently been highlighted in the news. A Bump Key is a device that works much like a lock pick. In addition, information regarding its construction and use is available to anyone online. As a matter of fact there are literally hundreds of videos detailing how to make and utilize a Bump Key on the Internet!

To make this situation even more serious, it doesn’t take any real level of expertise to use a Bump Key on your Taymor locks in Greenside Estates, since they are easier to use than a lock pick. Also, since a Bump Key resembles a normal key, law enforcers are less prone to noticing them, as opposed to lock picking tools. For this, and other reasons, bump-resistant and pick-resistant locks are in high demand. For locking systems of this nature, one of the most trusted names in deadbolts and other locking devices is Schlage.

Primus High-Security and Schlage B Series Locks

Schlage offers high-security Primus keys and cylinders and can also provide a 2^nd milling that gives the advantage of a seamless integration with a current Schlage lock. This will also deter an unauthorized key replication by requiring an entry that is based on a pre-approved signer’s list.

The Schlage B600 Series is a commercial grade deadlock that is also exceptionally good for residential use especially in Greenside Estates, as well. This series of deadlocks possess bronze or solid brass cylinder collars along with an “ice-pick resistant” security shield. They also have ball bearings made of hardened steel, which are designed to protect their 2 heavy¼” mounting bolts against attacks that use a drill bit.

The entire B-Series (standard strikes) include a reinforcer that will attach to a wood frame with 2 heavy 3-inch screws. This design allows it to resist a kick-in attack. It will also resist cylinder wrenching due to its reinforced collars.

These locking systems can be used for more than just securing an entrance door. They are also perfect for protecting; storage facilities, pool gates, utility spaces and anywhere else where a high level of security is desired. The B600 series deadbolts can also be obtained with a choice of solid brass or bronze trim rings.

We get it, you are proud of your acquisitions and your possessions. There is no shame in that as you have worked hard to obtain all these items after all. Cars:

Realistically, cars will always get broken into if they are outside in your clusters or your visitor parking.  Auto crime is huge in both Surrey and Langley. Windows and Patios:

Do not leave your windows and patio door unattended. When leaving your property, close all of your windows and lock them. Unlocked doors and unlocked windows are an open invitation to thieves.

Sheds:

Many residents at Greenside Estates own sheds. Shed security depends on the door, but almost exactly the same protection as your front door (when properly secured). We would install a door blocker on your shed that would fit on the front of the shed deadbolt.

Today, we are going to talk about key control by using high-security Abloy keys that can’t be duplicated or unauthorized duplication. In the old days, you’d stamp a Kwikset key with do not copy but they could take the key to the local shoe repair guy and get a key cut. So, “do not copy” is absolutely meaningless on a regular key. It’s not worth nothing, and we tell people that. However, when you get a proper system like and Abloy, Schlage Primus or Medeco lock that have the patented key control, nobody can cut the keys unless you are the authorized person. It’s a special key Patented High-Security Key. The Abloy is key particularly good because it can not be cut by anything other than an Abloy key machine. So, if we’re cutting them, and even another authorized Abloy dealer will not cut this key for anybody at all because they just lose the whole ability to sell Abloy and a big fine from the manufacture written into the seller agreement.

The Abloy keys are high security. Each one is cut individually on a special Abloy machine. You can’t just get a machine and say, “Hey, you know, can you put this one here?” Which is a cut key and a key blank and just duplicate it like traditional ones. You can’t do that. This is Abloy Protec 2. It’s a latest technology. It does have a ball bearing inside, and that is integral in locking and unlocking your door. So if it ever pops out, which it shouldn’t, that alone will stop you from opening that door. Abloy Protec 2, when you purchase a lock, you will get a registration card that will match a two-part registration card, where you keep one part and I will keep one part, and when you reorder, you will have to present that card in order to get duplicate copies of that. So, anybody who phones my number and the key and says “I want a duplicate copy of this key” will not get a key. It could be your plumber, your electrician nanny, cook, whatever. It doesn’t really matter.

The bottom line is, this is a patented key control system, it requires a special key machine to cut it, you’re not going get this cut by the local hardware store or the shoemaker. No one is going to be able to cut this. The specs are so tight, we are not gonna see them in the foreseeable future.

This total key control, when they dig up our civilization, I keep on hearing, “Oh, keys are old.” “They’re gonna go passe.” “We’re all gonna go electronic locks.” No. When it gets right down to it if you have to secure something you are going do it with a High-Security Lock and key. If you want to be totally secure, you are going to have something that has patented key control. This is a high security Abloy. It’s the Protec 2. Nobody can cut the keys except for the authorized dealer only with the authorized cardholder. This is a patented system, and again, I have it on everything. I have it in the Locksmith and my house. Whether it’s a master key, regular key, or whatever. The Abloy is one of the best systems out there for key control and physical security for your home or office.

I’m Terry Whin-Yates Mr. LockSmith and I have the Top 10 security tips for securing your church during the holiday season. People laugh at me, they go, what do you mean I need security tips for securing my church? It is amazing how many churches are broken into during the Christmas season. It’s amazing, we’re getting call, church after church during the holidays, they’ve been broken into and things have been stolen. And when you think about it from all the bits and pieces, the besides the cash, also the audio visual equipment, the musical instruments, there’s a lot to steal in a church and they’re just highly attractive targets during the holiday season. So this is the following security tips for securing your church. Doesn’t matter what religion, they all get hit during the holiday season.

Rekey your church. Everybody seems to have a key to the front door and the office of the church. Go there, rekey all the locks, know exactly where your keys are and who has them. It’s amazing how many times the church is broken into by a key. Who knows who did it, cuz there’s like 100 keys out there or more. Rekey, know where your keys are, which takes me to the next point. If you’re going to give out keys, do not copy, do not duplicate stamped on the keys is a waste of time. You have a common Schlage, Schlage, Kwikset, Weiser Keyway that everybody can cut keys at the local little hardware store to the shoemaker can cut that key. Do not copy doesn’t help you at all.

Upgrade Your Locks to High Security Locks: You need a high security or restricted keyway. When you give out those keys to people you number them, give them the key, have them sign for it, you know they can’t go to the local hardware store and get a key cut. Only the licensed locksmith that sold you that key system can duplicate the keys. Local hardware store will not have the high security keys. It requires special keys and a lot of the, special keys, special key machines, and a lot of these keys are only sold to locksmith companies. So when you’re gonna rekey, go to the high security restricted key systems like Abloy, Medeco, Primus, those are my three favorite. There’s a few more.

Lock Your Doors: Lock the office and have a secure lock on there. It’s amazing how many times the office, the church office, is unlocked. Put a lock on there, every time it closes, the door automatically locks, and put a good quality deadbolt on that door. People just walk into the office and there’s the offerings from today’s service or last night’s, and it’s just sitting there. I’m amazed at how many offices are unlocked and people just walked into the office and just helped themselves, an unlocked office. So again, secure it, put on a good deadbolt, lock it up. Also, if you’re gonna leave money onsite, have a good quality safe.

Fire and Burglar Safes: Have a burglar safe that is burglar-resistant and you’re gonna put the money in there. Really you shouldn’t leave any money in there but if you have to, put it into a burglar-resistant safe. A fire safe is a fire safe, it will not stop any form of attack, it’s to protect papers and valuable papers against fire. If you’ve seen any of my videos, you know all these electronic safes or these little fire safes you buy at your Home Depot or hardware store or Costco, you can open them in seconds, and if you have a screwdriver or a pry bar, there’s nothing you can’t open, so you have to have a proper burglary-resistant safe.

Alarms and camera systems. Yes, alarm your church. You have musical instruments, you have audio visual, you have a lot of expensive items, alarm the church and have it monitored.

Security Guard or Runner Service: When the alarm goes off, the police, it’s a low priority to go to a residential or even commercial or church break and enter. If the alarm goes off, it’s a low priority. Get yourself a security guard or runner service to show up. Don’t have one of your members of the church show up, they’re not prepared to deal with a break-in in progress. So have a professional security guard company, runner service, they’ll go there, it’s not expensive, the alarm goes off, the runner service shows up, they see a beanie in progress or whatever, they know who to call and when they call the police, the police will respond to your runner service immediately.

Engrave or ID Mark all Equipment: One of the simplest and least expensive and most overlooked is engrave information on everything you have in the church of value. Your speaker systems, your musical instruments, TVs, everything, engrave property of your church. Have your phone number on there. This helps on a couple things. Sometimes the burglars will see you’ve engraved everything and not steal it. Or if they do steal it and the police find it later, you can recover your valuable items. So engrave everything, especially the audio visual stuff, it doesn’t take much to put “Property Of” and the phone number. Put it on everything you have. It’s quick, easy, and very inexpensive. Go buy a Dremel or Buzz Bomb or stamp the information in. Engrave everything you have of value with your name of your church, your phone number, sometimes you can get a special number from the police will give you a number. Whatever identification number you can get it on everything going. It’s cheap, inexpensive and very very effective. Lock your doors. It’s amazing how many businesses are unlocked after employees leave or you leave. The crooks are shake, walking around, shaking the doors, seeing what’s open. It’s amazing how many businesses are unlocked at night. So lock your doors, secure your windows, and check it make sure everything. It’s amazing how many people do not lock their doors during the holidays or during any time of the year.

Rekey your Locks: When you’re re-keying your locks, it’s a good time to go to a restricted or high-security key and lock system. When you use these systems like Abloy, Medeco, Primus, what happens is the keys are restricted and only for sale at the locksmith’s. You’re not going to be able to walk into the local hardware store with a Medeco key and get it cut by that local hardware store or the shoemaker who cuts keys. When you stamp do not copy or do not duplicate on a common key like Schlayge, Schlage, Kwikset, or Weiser, it’s a waste of time. The local hardware stores have those key blanks, and the little shoemakers on the corner, they will cut those keys. Do not copy, do not duplicate stamped on a key is a waste of time. You have a high-security restricted key blank, they are never ever sold to the local hardware store, or the Home Depots, or anybody except for locksmiths who are security cleared and qualified. They are the only ones with those restricted keys. So get a high-security restricted key system. When you give it to staff, if when they leave or whatever, when they hand you back that key, you know they have not had that cut anywhere.

Alarm systems are not the big deterrent anymore, they were 10, 15, 20 years ago. You could put a alarm sticker on your business, and the crooks wouldn’t bother with your business. However now they’re breaking in. They don’t care. They’re gonna get in quick and get out. But you still need alarm system. The alarm system will scare them off, or at least them know it’s time to go. Alarm systems should be monitored, they’re not as expensive as they used to be. You can get a good quality alarm system and monitored for a very fair price. When it’s monitored the police never show up. No matter what they tell you, unless you’re in a small town, in any of the major cities, a alarm on a business or a home, that’s called into the police is a low low priority. They’re so busy they’re not gonna go out. If you wanna be really secure, you have your monitoring station then contact security guard company or a runner service that when the alarm goes off, for a small fee, they show up at the business, they look inside check the doors. If you’ve been broken into, they call the police. The police will respond to a security guard or a runner service saying in progress or it’s been broken into. They will show up. So a alarm system with a runner service is the way to go.

CCTV: Cameras will not stop break-ins. However they are good for an investigative aid for the police after the fact. And a lot of times these burglars, these criminals are hitting business after business. When the police have video to view, then they have some evidence to tie them to the crime. So it’s an investigative aid. Again it won’t stop crime, but it’s great for the police to use, or even yourself when you’re viewing the video. Sometimes you’re amazed its a former staff, current staff, or someone you know. It’s always amazing when you’re looking at the video and you go, oh shoot I know who they are.

No Cash on Premises: If you have a retail business or a restaurant, take your empty till at the end of the night, and put that till drawer and put it at the front door, if you can look inside. Put it on the floor, put it against the door, say no cash on premises. It is amazing how many businesses leave money in the till. They think oh you have the change, you have a few bills, there’s still usually 20 or 100 bucks which makes a crack-head or a meth-head happy. Take your till, empty it, put it by the front door. Show no cash on premises. That is just amazing. That will slow down the criminals. They have to really want to come in.

Fire safes and Burglar safes are two different things. A fire safe will protect your business records. A burglary safe will protect your valuables and cash. If you’re paying under $300 for a safe, it’s not a burglary safe. Good quality burglary safes are expensive and they’re rated as burglary safes. Too many businesses are going to the local store, buying a inexpensive fire safe, and then throwing money or jewelry in it. It’s amazing what I see inside some of these fire safes. If you’ve seen my other videos, you know the inexpensive safes, fire safes, shouldn’t even call them safes, are super easy to open. And with a crowbar or a large screwdriver, they pop left right center. Don’t put a fire safe to protect your valuables. Realize fire safe is for protecting documents from fire. Get a burglary safe. There’s lots of information on my website and other places to get good quality burglary resistant safes.

Gun Safe: One thing that’s overlooked is a gun safe for your business. Gun safes are big, they’re not that expensive, and you don’t have to put guns in them. They’re huge container that’s very secure, even an inexpensive gun safe. Have that tucked away in the back and put some of your valuables in there. You’re gonna slow down the burglars. They’re gonna get into it, but it just slows them down. Gun safes are fantastic for large items or just a lot of little stuff that’s not really expensive, but you don’t wanna lose. Anchor the gun safe to the floor or the wall or both.

Facebook and Social Media: Be careful. When you go on vacation and you’re putting postings, we’re closed ’cause we’re going to Hawaii, you’re telling every burglar in town that your the business is, no one’s there, you’re gonna be away, they can see how long you’re gonna be away for. I know it’s difficult. We all love our social media, like to post pictures of you on the beach to the people in 40 below with snow, but be careful with your social media, what you’re posting. ‘Cause they’re gonna know the business is closed, you’re away, and also know your home is, you’re not at home either. So be careful with social media, what you post, especially when your extended vacations are away.
