The customer was broken into in East Vancouver. The burglars just kicked the door in. Very common Break and Enter in Vancouver. You can see the door was broken and the cheap Off-Shore deadbolt just failed. Unfortunately, too many of these inexpensive deadbolts ($10-$45) are installed in Vancouver, sometimes on new condos and new buildings.

Mike from Mr. Locksmith Vancouver rather than replace the door he installed a Mag Plate / Door Reinforcer (doubles the strength of the door) and a new Schlage Deadbolt (B660) with the Commerical Grade C123 Key and Cylinder. The Schlage Deadbolt is one of our favorite deadbolts.

We call this our Vancouver Special. The door frame did not need a 18″ Strike Plate installed on the door frame because it was metal.

Abloy High Security Key Control | Mr. Locksmith Blog http://www.becomealocksmith.info/abloy-high-security-key-control-mr-locksmith-blog/ Sat, 14 Oct 2017 17:50:30 +0000 https://www.mrlocksmith.com/?p=3434 Abloy High Security Key Control | Mr. Locksmith Blog

Today, we are going to talk about key control by using high-security Abloy keys that can’t be duplicated or unauthorized duplication. In the old days, you’d stamp a Kwikset key with do not copy but they could take the key to the local shoe repair guy and get a key cut. So, “do not copy” is absolutely meaningless on a regular key. It’s not worth nothing, and we tell people that. However, when you get a proper system like and Abloy, Schlage Primus or Medeco lock that have the patented key control, nobody can cut the keys unless you are the authorized person. It’s a special key Patented High-Security Key. The Abloy is key particularly good because it can not be cut by anything other than an Abloy key machine. So, if we’re cutting them, and even another authorized Abloy dealer will not cut this key for anybody at all because they just lose the whole ability to sell Abloy and a big fine from the manufacture written into the seller agreement.

The Abloy keys are high security. Each one is cut individually on a special Abloy machine. You can’t just get a machine and say, “Hey, you know, can you put this one here?” Which is a cut key and a key blank and just duplicate it like traditional ones. You can’t do that. This is Abloy Protec 2. It’s a latest technology. It does have a ball bearing inside, and that is integral in locking and unlocking your door. So if it ever pops out, which it shouldn’t, that alone will stop you from opening that door. Abloy Protec 2, when you purchase a lock, you will get a registration card that will match a two-part registration card, where you keep one part and I will keep one part, and when you reorder, you will have to present that card in order to get duplicate copies of that. So, anybody who phones my number and the key and says “I want a duplicate copy of this key” will not get a key. It could be your plumber, your electrician nanny, cook, whatever. It doesn’t really matter.

The bottom line is, this is a patented key control system, it requires a special key machine to cut it, you’re not going get this cut by the local hardware store or the shoemaker. No one is going to be able to cut this. The specs are so tight, we are not gonna see them in the foreseeable future.

On 3-D printer or other methods of key duplication. This total key control, when they dig up our civilization, I keep on hearing, “Oh, keys are old.” “They’re gonna go passe.” “We’re all gonna go electronic locks.” No. When it gets right down to it if you have to secure something you are going do it with a High-Security Lock and key. If you want to be totally secure, you are going to have something that has patented key control. This is a high security Abloy. It’s the Protec 2. Nobody can cut the keys except for the authorized dealer only with the authorized cardholder. This is a patented system, and again, I have it on everything. I have it in the Locksmith and my house. Whether it’s a master key, regular key, or whatever. The Abloy is one of the best systems out there for key control and physical security for your home or office.

Burrard Street Bridge in Vancouver British Columbia is an unofficial Love Lock Bridge. City work crews repeatedly remove padlocks from the Burrard Street Bridge. Also, the chain link fence just east of the Plaza of Nations on the False Creek seawall is another location of Love Locks.

A love locks sculpture dedicated to eternal love is now in the lookout above the Quarry Garden in Queen Elizabeth Park, Vancouver, BC.

The sculpture is designed by Vancouver artist Bruce Voyce and celebrates the shelter that love brings and the union that it forms. It will support several thousand locks on the skirts of each couple.

Keys can be deposited in a box on site and will eventually be recycled or melted down to become part of another sculpture.

A love lock or love padlock is a padlock lovers lock on a bridge or similar public fixture to symbolize their love. Usually, you engrave your names on the padlock, lock it onto the bridge and then throw the keys into the Seine river below below to symbolize their unbreakable love.

Vancouver joins other famous Love Locks locations in Rome and Paris. The Ponte Milvio is a famous bridge in the northern part of Rome, specifically the Della Vittoria district. The bridge became so popular that, despite it’s strong brick foundation, the city feared it might sink from all of the locks.

People still visit Ponte Milvio to lock their padlock to the bridge and declare their eternal love, today.

Paris actually has two Love bridges , the Pont de l’Archevêché and the Pont des Arts, are probably the most well known love lock bridges in the World. One bridge is for “lovers” and the other bridge is for “the love of your life.”

Mr. Locksmith Top Ten Security Tips for the Home during the Holidays

Mr. Locksmith Top Ten Security Tips for the Home during the Holidays

Rekey your house or upgrade your deadbolts.

One of the first things you should do is lock your doors. Lock your doors, lock your windows, lock your patio doors, lock your car. Just lock it. It’s amazing how many homes and condos are open. You can walk through the neighborhood, and this is what the crooks do, we call them doorshakers, they just shake the door, see what’s unlocked, they go in and steal your stuff.

The next tip is rekey your house. If you don’t know where every single key is, if you’ve moved in and never changed the locks, if you’ve lost keys, if you’ve lent out keys to repair people, service people, whatever, rekey your house. You gotta know where they all are. It’s amazing how many break-ins happen because somebody has a key, they walk in and just open the door with the key and steal everything you got. So rekey your locks, upgrade your deadbolts put on some good high quality deadbolts that will stop the people from picking, bumping, kicking the doors in. Let’s make that door secure. Put on a good, high quality deadbolt. I have some great high security locks, the Abloy High Security Locks, Medeco and Schlage Primus. Upgrade your deadbolts to a good high-security lock, and don’t get the SmartKeybecause the are  dumb.

Make your house look lived in. If you have lights on, but have them, you know, you could nowadays, with, you could have them on programmable, you can have them turn off and on, get your lights on, have the house look lived in. One of my favorite things to do is when I go away is I leave the TV on. I put the TV on to the news channel, leave it there, I turn up the sound, the flickering of the TV screen makes it look like people are walking around in the house. The other cool feature is outside, all they hear is the bass, they hear boom boom boom boom boom. They can’t hear, they know somebody’s talking inside and they hear the bass outside, they see the flickering lights. Leaving the TV on is a fantastic way of making your house looked in.

Mail and newspapers. You’re going away, get the mail so it’s not piled up. Get somebody picking up your mail. Don’t just let it pack up there and make it look like the home’s not lived in. Same thing with newspapers, junk mail, flyers, all that garbage that comes during the holiday season. Get, if you’re away, get somebody to move it. One of the problems I had where I lived before, I always came in the back door and one day I went out the front door and there was like piles of flyers cuz I never went to the front door. Check your front door, make sure that there’s not a bunch of old stuff there, even if you’re home, you got all this stuff that makes it looks like nobody lives there. So when you’re going away, get some, get a help, get that stuff moved out of there.

One of my favorite security tips is get a gun safe for the home. First of all, if you have firearms, you should have a gun safe anyways to lock up your firearms. Firearms, ammunition, everything. However, you don’t have to have firearms in a gun safe. Even the inexpensive gun safes are a great place to store, you know, some of your, maybe your, some of your expensive china, pictures, paper and valuable items from fire. They will not protect any valuables at all from any burglary attempt. If you seen my other videos, you know how easy it is to open fire safes. Fire safes are good for fire protection only, not for valuables. Papers, that sort of thing. Burglary safes are rated for protecting your items, they’re burglar-resistant, they are meant for your jewelry, your gold, your cash. They are meant to slow down burglars. Your fire safe and your burglary safe should be secured, anchorable to the floor or wall, very easy to do. That slows the criminals down a little bit. You can get a combination fire and burglary safes together, so they have fire protection and burglary-resistant protection, That’s my favorite for the home. They’re not inexpensive, they start at $500 up but they’re a very good investment. You got one safe, does everything. If you have firearms in the house, you need a gun safe. Inexpensive gun safe to expensive gun safe, they’re all good. Of course the more money you spend, the more highly rated they are, the better it is to protect your firearms. One of my favorite thing is you don’t have guns, firearms to protect your goods. Get a big gun safe, anchor it to the wall and floor, and put in some of the stuff that you just don’t want stolen, you know, a few of your watches, some inexpensive jewelry, I put my, I have some favorite china that was given to me by my grandmother, I put my china in the gun safe. It’s big, it’s got a lot of space, I put my cameras in there. Yes, they should go in the fire safe, but half the time, no it’s not going in, so what I do is I put the my cameras, my camera gear, some bits and pieces, some of my favorite stuff is in my gun safe. Alarm systems. The days are now gone when a sticker on your door will stop them from busting in.

Top 10 Security Tips for Home During Holidays

Gun Safe

Have a good quality alarm system but realize the limitations. Right now, everybody has alarms. Half the time they’re not turned on. You have an alarm system, turn it on. The thieves kick the door in, the alarm goes off, they run in real quick, steal what they can and get out. Alarm systems are great, but they’re not gonna stop break-ins anymore. One of the recommendations we do to a lot of people if you’re away, it’s inexpensive, but have a runner service. A runner service is a security guard company, when the alarm goes off, they get the notification, forget the police showing up, I don’t know what city you live in, the police never show up to home alarms, especially around the holiday season. It’s a low low priority if they even show up, so if you’re really concerned, have the alarm will go off, the runner service will show up, then if the runner service sees that there’s a break-in, they will call the police, and they will also, you know, you have an arrangement to secure your property if it was busted into. But again, alarm systems are great, they’re inexpensive. Monitored systems are getting less expensive and there’s even systems now that go right to your smartphone so you get a break-in, your smartphone will go off. Which takes me to the next point. I love cameras. You could put cameras inside your house now, cameras are not gonna prevent crime, but they do aide the police in identifying who went in, and if they can look at the video and see who’s been in there, then they can usually piece it together with other break-ins in the area. Burglars and criminals don’t get caught until their 27th break-in, so they’re doing break-in, break-in, break-in, and the statistics show they get caught about every 27th break-in, so they’ve had a good free for all for a long time, so when you have some video evidence, it can help. Also, it’s amazing when you have break-ins and you see it’s a relative or a neighbor, that’s always kind of amazing when you see that. So, cameras are great to have and again, you can monitor these from your smartphone.

If your Christmas tree is visible from outside, because you’re showing off the lights, whatever, don’t have gifts under the Christmas tree. A lot of people that come home after shopping, or out at a party, and every gift under the tree is stolen, you can see it from the street, you can see inside, they got the lights on, they got everything, they looks like nobody’s home, there’s all the gifts, they go in there and steal the gifts. Don’t have your Christmas gifts visible under the tree from outside. Common sense there. This helps a little bit before Christmas, but especially after Christmas or Boxing Day in Canada. Don’t put the empty boxes outside on the street. You got the new TV set, you got the new home theater system, got whatever, don’t put the boxes on the street. Flatten them, cut them, turn them inside out, don’t make it look like you’ve got that brand new super duper 4K TV set, and there’s the empty box sitting on the street. Don’t put your empty boxes showing what you got on the street.

Top 10 Security Tips for Home During Holidays

Mr. Locksmith Terry Whin-Yates

Facebook and Social Media. Don’t post, we’re going away to Hawaii on vacation on your Facebook. You have friends and they may have shady friends and people know you’re going away, they know you’re away for a month, they got a long time to plan to get your house. Yeah I know it’s tough, we like to post things but be aware, other people will now know your house is empty.

One of the basics that nobody does anymore, and it’s a real help to the police when they recover your stolen goods is engrave your information on everything you own. Put your name, put your phone number and the one thing that the police love is you put your driver’s license number. Put your state or province, put your driver’s license number on your items that you own. Put your name on it, put it on the back of the TV, put it on everything. You can buy these little Dremel engravers and just engrave information on everything you own. I’ve gone into houses and I’ve seen where they’ve noticed the big engraving on everything and they’ve just left it behind. Social security numbers and social insurance numbers aren’t good to put on, because a lot of times the different government agencies can’t access that information. One thing in the old days they would say put that on, but police departments have a difficult time getting that information from the government. So your driver’s license information, your phone number with area code is fantastic.

3 Common Types of Smart Locks http://www.becomealocksmith.info/3-common-types-of-smart-locks/ http://www.becomealocksmith.info/3-common-types-of-smart-locks/#respond Tue, 05 Apr 2016 04:17:23 +0000 http://mrlocksmith.com/?p=2667 Choosing a good smart lock can be confusing with variety of options to choose from. But before you make your choice, here are some of the common types of smart locks that you might want to consider.

Below are 3 common types of smart locks:

August Smart Lock
Available in Apple stores everywhere and thus arguably the most high-profile smart lock around, the stylish August Smart Lock can be a good solution if you want to use an existing deadbolt; adding the August Connect Wi-Fi adapter lets you share access easily and keep tabs on who comes and goes from wherever you are. It makes a lot of sense for renters or vacation-home owners, though we had a few quibbles: the battery compartment can slide off, and the auto-unlock feature was too unstable to be usable in urban environments, as it triggered a few times even when we were home. Another August add-on, the August Smart Keypad, which can be installed outside the house next to your door, allows for easier, smartphone-free access-sharing to guests. Once you figure in the expense though, some users might be better off simply buying a keypad-equipped deadbolt, such as our second-place pick, the Schlage Touchscreen Deadbolt. Source: TheWireCutter

Lockitron Bolt
The Lockitron fits over the thumb-turn on the deadbolt of a door. With the help of a smartphone, the lock can be opened remotely through a Web app or text message. It’s also equipped with GPS, which allows it to detect if someone is close by. This means you can easily open the door without having to search for keys or put down items like shopping bags. Other features include the ability to sync with any type of smartphone, the ability to sense a knock and send information as an alert to someone’s phone, the ability to track and be alerted when the door is locked or unlocked and to be alerted when someone is home. Source:  TechTimes

Goji Smart Lock
The Goji Smart Lock, with its own on-lock welcome screen, is packed with features. The device works both via Bluetooth for smartphone and fob proximity unlocking and via Wi-Fi for remote control functionality. No worries if you somehow lock yourself out without your phone – Goji maintains a customer service call center for lockout requests. Each Goji comes with 4 electronic keys and 2 mechanical backup keys. Source: Techlicious

FIC Trailer Lock Recall http://www.becomealocksmith.info/fic-trailer-lock-recall/ http://www.becomealocksmith.info/fic-trailer-lock-recall/#respond Wed, 25 Mar 2015 03:16:56 +0000 http://mrlocksmith.com/?p=2150 FIC Trailer Lock Recall

Manufacturers should always keep the welfare of the customers in mind. While it is a big hassle to recall a particular product, it is the most logical thing to do to avoid compromising the safety of people who bought and use it. Although there was a mistake that was overlooked before the release of the product in the market, a recall can still salvage the reputation of a manufacturer. It is still the responsible thing to do in such cases.

In cases of locks, recalls are done with accordance to the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act. One instance of lock recall was from Fastec Industrial Corp. It involves the trailer locks sold from 2006 to April of 2013. There is a problem with the deadbolt cylinders which may compromise the safety of its users. Therefore, the attention of FIC trailer lock users are needed so they can check whether their FIC locks are included in this recall or not.

Here are the things that you should do if your trailer lock is recalled:

  • – Request for free replacement. Go to FIC’s official website, www.fastecindustrial.com to request for it.
  • – You can also call their toll free number, 800-837-2505 to request for a replacement.
  • – Answer the survey at the FIC official website.

These FIC locks are recalled because it opens even when it is not in the 12 o’clock position. This can be dangerous as it can be inconvenient. It may cause the lock to jam and that may cause accidents and hassles. In case that the lock’s deadbolt jams, people will not be able to get out of their trailers. This may force them to find other ways to get out and they may get hurt in the process.

The good news is that FIC is not turning their backs on their customers. These are the things that you will get in place of your recalled FIC trailer lock:

  • – New lock cylinder sets for the deadbolt lock
  • – New lock cylinder sets for the paddle handle
  • – Instructions for removing the cylinders
  • – Instructions for replacing the cylinders
  • – Prepaid shipping

Here are the things that you should do to identify whether the trailer lock that you are using is one of the recalled FIC locks:

Check the color of your deadbolt lock. Recalled FIC trailer locks are colored black, chrome, and white.

Check if there is “FIC” on the paddle handle.

Check the code on the key’s metal shaft. The recalled codes are HF-304, HF-307, HF- 308, HF-309, HF-311, HF-313, HF-315, HF-316, HF-320, HF-322, HF-323, HF-328, HF-331, HF-335, HF-336, HF-339, HF-342, HF-343, HF-347, and HF-349.

If all that you have is the duplicate copy of your key, there is no need to worry. You can still check the code of your key on the main body lock. Look for the label there wherein the code is written.

Check if you can lock, open, and remove the key from the lock even when it is in the 9 o’clock position and not 12 o’clock.

Once you found out that your trailer lock is included in the recall, do what you need to do and get a safer and better set.

Love Locks on the Pont Des Arts Bridge in Paris France caused a partial collapse of the famous bridge. http://www.becomealocksmith.info/love-locks-pont-des-arts-bridge/ http://www.becomealocksmith.info/love-locks-pont-des-arts-bridge/#respond Mon, 14 Jul 2014 15:51:54 +0000 http://mrlocksmith.com/?p=2007 Love Locks on the Pont Des Arts Bridge in Paris France caused a partial collapse of the famous bridge.  A love lock or love padlock is a padlock lovers lock on a bridge or similar public fixture to symbolize their love. Usually, you engrave your names on the padlock, lock it onto the bridge and then throw the keys into the Seine river below below to symbolize their unbreakable love.

The Pont Des Arts Bridge is a famous  landmark city footbridge that links the Louvre museum to the Saint Germain neighbourhood over the Seine river is starting to buckle under the weight of locks left behind by couples looking to declare their love. Just visible upstream from the bridge is the Gothic Cathedral of Notre Dame. It has been estimated there is approximately 60-90 metric tons of padlock metal on the bridge.

Paris actually has Two Love bridges , the Pont de l’Archevêché and the Pont des Arts, are probably the most well known love lock bridges in the World. One bridge is for “lovers” and the other bridge is for “the love of your life.”

Another good destinations include Cologne (Germany) and Rome. The Ponte Milvio bridge in Rome is also a popular love lock bridge.  Some people believe the trend started here, inspired by the 2006 novel, I Want You, by Federico Moccia.  (Note: Video coming soon).

Others believe the tradition started in the Huangshan Mountains of China.  The legend goes that two lovers threw themselves from the mountain rather than be separated by an arranged marriage.  Today lovers climb to a bridge in the mountains, add a lock to it’s chains and throw the key down into the valley below.

Master Lock made a website where you can pick a lock, pick a bridge and send a love lock to your lover.

Burrard Street Bridge in Vancouver British Columbia is an unofficial Love Lock Bridge. However, City work crews repeatedly remove padlocks from the Burrard Street Bridge. Also, the chain link fence just east of the Plaza of Nations on the False Creek seawall is another location of Love Locks.

Several more videos on Love Locks coming up. Thanks Terry Whin-Yates
