How to use a Plug Spinner or Flipper
I provide hands-on comprehensive knowledge about locking and unlocking principles, security issues, and effective use of cutting-edge products. Each student will cut over 100+ keys per students (by code and manual key machines) and rekey, shim, pick open, take apart (and put back together) lots of locks (deadbolts and key in knobs). Also, lock-outs, broken keys and picking locks.
This is a hands on locksmith training class, no watching movies, you will learn hands on, you do the work. This is not a correspondence course. The locksmith class is designed to teach engineering or maintenance employees for large facilities (School, Hospital, Corrections, Policing, etc.) and is a good start for beginners. I have several plug spinners in my lock picking kit that will flip the plug to the opposite or unlocked position and they all accomplish the same task, but in slightly different way.
My favorite or every day plug spinner is the A1 Plug Spinner. It is durable and fits in my everyday pick case and I have a spare in my Lock Picking Kit.
In my Lock Picking Kit I have the Pistol of Gun Plug Spinner. I like the larger blade for inserting into automotive locks and the higher tension when you flip the plug. Specifically, I use this plug spinner for BMW locks. You can pick a BMW lock to the locked position easier than the unlocked position. I pick the BMW to the locked position then I use the Pistol Plug Spinner. Note: be careful you can apply too much tension and damage the lock.
Rytan makes an excellent plug spinner and extra tension sprints are inexpensive and easy to replace. I keep one in my Lock Picking Kit but I find it a little bulky for my everyday pick kit but an excellent plug spinner.
Various other styles and plug spinners are available. You will need more than one type of plug spinner in your lockout kit. Again, the plug spinner is a time saver, some locks will only pick one way or you just picked it to the locked position instead of the locked position. Just adjust your tension and direction on the plug spinner, insert into the lock and depress the release and the plug will quickly flip to the opposite direction without locking.
In conclusion, the Plug Spinner or Lock Flipper is a vital tool for all locksmiths.

Note: I do not recommend this lock because of a major security weakness. The lock can be opened in seconds with a tool available on the internet or a person can make one. Videos defeating this lock are on the internet. Remember the Kryptonite Bike Locks that were defeated with the pic pen, most locksmiths for year were opening these “Pick Proof” bike locks for years before it became public knowledge how easy they could be opened.
However, many people still buy these Smart Key locks because they are inexpensive and they can rekey it themselves.
To rekey the Smart key lock as follows:
You must have your Functioning Key and Learn Tool for this to work. If you have lost the keys or the lock no longer works after rekeying you will need a special “Reset Cradle Tool.” Note: most locksmiths have this reset tool.
The Smart key lock has a small slot on the left of the keyway.
Insert functioning key & turn 1/4 turn clockwise.
Insert & remove the SmartKey learn tool.
Remove functioning key.
Insert new key.
Insert new key & turn 1/2 turn counter-clockwise.
Remove the key and with the door OPEN, check the key to make sure it locks and unlocks the door.
In conclusion, a easy lock for the customer / end user to rekey. However, the lock is so easy to open without the key using a very simple tool to defeat the lock. All of our Mr. Locksmith Professional Locksmith can rekey the Smart Key locks if you have lost the keys and if you are locked out Mr. Locksmith can open the door in seconds with no visable damage to lock.
I highly recommend you replace this lock ASAP (remember the Kryptonite Locks that were defeated with the pic pen?).
My favorite deadbolt and I have been installing Schlage for over 30 years is the Commercial Grade Schlage deadbolt either the new B560 with the new Everest C123 key or the B660 Heavy Duty deadbolt with a Primus High Security Lock that is rated as “Pick and drill resistant”.
More information now and coming soon on our website, You Tube and Flickir.

On Tuesday night July 26, 2011 at the PNE Prize Home in Vancouver, British Columbia Canada representatives from Wesier Lock did not allow Terry Whin-Yates to enter the “Professional Lock Picking Contest.” Also, several other Mr. Locksmith representatives were not allowed to enter the picking contest to pick the Weiser Smart Key deadbolts.
The lock has a well known major security weakness. The lock can be opened in seconds with a tool available on the internet or a person can make one. Videos defeating this lock are on the internet. Mr. Locksmith will soon add his video to YouTube.
This ignored security flaw is similar to how Kryptonite Bike Locks ignored internet videos that showed how to defeat the bike locks with the pic pen. Most locksmiths for years were opening these “Pick Proof” bike locks before it became public knowledge how easy they could be opened. The locks were later recalled and the new product was very much improved. Will the Wesier Smart Key product be recalled?
Weiser Lock should rename future events to “Amateur Lock Picking Contest” and not allow any professional locksmiths near their locks. Terry Whin-Yates during his Locksmith courses can train almost anyone to open the lock in seconds so maybe future contests will have to include not allowing people who have watched videos on the internet on how to defeat this lock.
Mr. Locksmith and their sister company Mr. Prolock open Weiser Locks and the new Smart Key Locks almost everyday 24/7. The lock can usually be opened in seconds with no sign of entry.
Terry Whin-Yates offered to open any lock on the PNE Prize Home or any of the display locks but was refused by a representative from Wesier Lock.
One interesting question, the PNE Prize Home has these locks on the exterior of the home, “how secure is the PNE Prize home?” Or more importantly “how secure is your home?”
Get the BLOG update at http://mrlocksmith.com later this week for video from Terry Whin-Yates being refused to participate in attempting to open the Smart Key Locks and have a look at his lock picking kit.

TENSION WRENCH OR TURNING TOOL
To pick a lock usually requires two (2) tools, a lock pick and a tension wrench” or “turning tool.”
I won’t go into semantics on the proper name for the tension wrench or turning tool, etc.. For the purpose of this book I will call it a tension wrench. Also, the majority of suppliers and manufacturers call it a tension wrench in their catalogs.
Selecting the Tension Wrench is just as important as selecting the lock pick. I consider the tension wrench the most important lock picking tool to open a lock. Without proper tension the lock is difficult to pick open.
Several different types of tension wrenches are available. They range from light to heavy spring steel, speciality tension wrenches (Peterson, Falle, etc.) and home made tension wrenches made from spring steel and allen keys.
You have to experiment with different tension wrenches to find what works best for you and also for the different locks you will pick open. To start picking a standard Weiser o/Kwikset or Schlage lock I prefer a rigid tension wrench and place it in the top of the keyway with a very light tension. Beginners should use a light tension wrench to start. For practice picking apply tension clockwise or counter clockwise. I try picking the lock to the unlocked position. However, the third most important tool in my lock picking kit is the “Flipper” or ‘Plug Spinner” (more on using a “Flipper” or “Plug Spinner” if you pick the lock the wrong way in an upcoming Blog). If this fails to pick open the lock I change to a medium tension wrench and again light tension.
Different locks require different tension wrenches and picks. Also, their is no right or wrong way if you are comfortable and confident and the end result is a picked lock.
However, you should never bend or break a lock pick. Be gentle, have “nice hands” (ask the ladies about “nice hands”). Sometimes you can be rough but the most successful lock pickers use light tension and have “nice hands.”
Note: Do not use too much turning tension. The most common cause of failure to pick a non-malfunctioning lock is to much tension that will bind the pins so they are unable to move.
My next Blog will be on the various lock picks.
Thanks
Terry Whin-Yates
